PERFUSION WEEK 4-10 MAY 2026
Recognising the heart of patient care and the skilled professionals behind the pump.
Perfusion Week (4–10 May) is our chance to celebrate perfusionists across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, raise awareness of what we do, and shine a light on a profession that is often essential… and invisible.
Perfusionists support life-saving cardiac surgery and mechanical circulatory support by managing cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO and complex physiology in real time. We’re the people quietly keeping everything stable while the rest of the team focuses on the operation.
This week, let’s make perfusion visible — for our teams, our hospitals, and our community. Professional advocacy and visibility makes it easier to have conversations about funding, requests for training, and even CPD for conferences if the people who make decisions understand the importance of what we do.

Perfusion Week doesn’t need to be complicated. The goal is simple: recognition + visibility + a little fun.
Here are easy ideas that any unit can do (pick one or two):
Make it visible in your hospital
- Put up a “What is a perfusionist?” or the college provided Perfusion week poster in theatres/ICU/ward areas
- Ask your hospital comms team to do a short intranet post or staff newsletter feature
- Do a 10-minute “Perfusion” talk at a theatre huddle or unit meeting
- Morning tea/lunch / coffee cart (simple = effective)
- Ask the surgeons to buy you a cake ;)
- A “thank you wall” — ask ICU/theatre staff to write one line about perfusion on hearts
- A light-hearted award: “Calmest under pressure”, “Best pump room DJ”, “Most likely to save the day”
- Post a team photo or short story on social media (templates in the toolkit)
Downloadable resources for your unit
We’ve created a ANZCP Perfusion Week Toolkit to make it easy for any unit to take part.

- Templates to make your own – docx or pdf
- Ready-to-copy intranet/newsletter letter templates
