My name is Shuja Zahidani, and I started my perfusion career in 2009 at the largest cardiovascular and cardiothoracic unit in Australasia, where I still work today. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to learn in a busy, high-acuity environment that has shaped how I approach both patient care and teamwork. My training includes backgrounds in science, nursing, and cardiovascular perfusion, which has given me a broad perspective on cardiac surgery and the role perfusion plays within it.

Clinically, my interests revolve around ECMO, heart transplantation, and translational research. I’ve been involved in minimally invasive mitral surgery from a perfusion perspective and have enjoyed working alongside surgeons and colleagues to adapt and refine techniques as these programs developed locally. I’ve also been part of teams introducing new perfusion practices into New Zealand, which has been a rewarding way to contribute to gradual improvements in care rather than big individual wins.

Balancing a demanding professional life, I am married to a wonderful woman and blessed with two energetic children who keep me on my toes. In my spare time, I enjoy playing cricket—a passion that reflects the dedication, focus, and teamwork I bring to my professional practice.

I care deeply about the perfusion profession and the people within it. Supporting colleagues, contributing to the ANZCP community, and helping strengthen the profile of New Zealand perfusionists are all things I’m passionate about. I’m particularly motivated by collaboration, shared learning, and leaving the profession a little stronger than I found it.
