Simon has worked as a paediatric perfusionist for over twenty years at the Royal Children’s Hospital which is the largest paediatric cardiac surgery unit in the southern hemisphere and the national centre for Paediatric cardiac transplantation. As part of the transplant service they are the only unit in Australia to offer Long Term VAD utilising Berlin Heart and Heartmate III which Simon holds a special interest in. His professional interests lie in the research, development and introduction of long term, centrifugal and transport ECLS circuits. Simon has also been a primary contributor to the development and implementation of related anticoagulation guidelines. He is also an active member of the national ECMO transport team.
He has also participated in starting up paediatric cardiac surgery programs in several third world countries.
The RCH Perfusion unit have been world leaders in the introduction of many clinical innovations including the use of centrifugal pumps, short term VAD, PMP oxygenators for ECMO and introduction of Nitric Oxide use in extracorporeal circuits
