STS Webinar: ECMO Challenges and Considerations

Please find a link to the STS Webinar that was conducted at 1am AEST Friday 24th April

An increased need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), without the required resources to meet the demand, is a noted issue in some areas. This STS webinar will involve discussions focused on the use of ECMO to treat COVID-positive patients.

Moderators Amy E. Hackmann, MD, Jonathan W. Haft, MD, and Nicholas R. Teman, MD, will be joined by Dan Brodie, MD (Columbia University, Presbyterian Hospital, NYC, representing ELSO), Guillaume Lebreton, MD, PhD (Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, Paris), R. Karianna Milewski, MD, PhD, MSEd (U Penn, Philadelphia), and Nader Moazami, MD (NYULMC, NYC). They will:

  • Explain the role of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) in guiding physicians and other practitioners through preparations for the COVID pandemic
  • Share experiences from an established ECMO center in Paris, where more than 150 patients have been treated for COVID with extracorporeal life support
  • Answer questions and provide current recommendations for COVID management with ECMO, including indications/contraindications, anticoagulation, tracheostomy, and prone positioning; and
  • Address use of personnel, time, and equipment-intense therapy in the setting of limited health care resources.
